We are fortunate to live in a great neighborhood, diverse in so many different ways that bring strength to our community.
For all of us the past several weeks have been difficult. Recognizing the differences in our world is not always easy, and tragedies like Minneapolis Minnesota, Brunswick Georgia, Louisville Kentucky and so many more remind us that we have much work left to do. We have to harness our diversity to bring our communities together, and work tirelessly to improve the world we live in.
Many have asked what can we do in Valley Village? How can we show support during these difficult times? A heartfelt post from one of our stakeholders offered an opportunity to demonstrate what makes Valley Village great. The comment read in part:
“Tonight, about 7:30 PM or so, I’m gonna light a candle. I’m going sit on the curb, or maybe stand, along Colfax Ave. I’m going to hold my candle and silently reflect. I will think about friends from the past and present, who live in my building or my neighborhood, but who also live in a very different world than me. My candle will burn for a bit. It will add a few lumens of brightness to the world, not much. But…maybe…if there were two candles…or 5….or 50….”
So let’s do this. Let’s show the world that there is a light shining in Valley Village. While it may not make things better right now, it shows we support everyone who is trying to change the world today, and tomorrow, and for generations to come.
Please join your Neighborhood Council Valley Village and Valley Village Homeowners Association Boards of Directors, and Pastor Rich Poole from Faith Presbyterian Church, and come out with a candle or the light on your cell phone, 7:30pm to 8:00pm, Sunday night June 7. Stand at any spot on Colfax Avenue between Magnolia Boulevard and Riverside Drive. No speeches, no march, safe distancing and masks please.
Our numbers will communicate our strength. Our candles will burn for a bit, and we’ll shine our light in support of a better world for everyone.
