Once every ten years across the country census-based redistricting occurs that impacts all levels of government. Beginning in 2021 the process of redrawing the boundaries for national, state and local government was begun to match reported census data. In CA this process was conducted in several different ways. For congressional, state senate and assembly seats, the CA Redistricting Commission, a nonpartisan, independent commission was established to drawn the lines in accordance with voter approved legislation. On the county level there was also an independent commission established to configure the new supervisory districts. And for the City of Los Angeles, a commission was appointed by members of the City Council and the Mayor.
Valley Village was dramatically impacted with the reshaping of boundaries, and at one point, we were faced with new elected officials at every level of government. Our NCVV board worked diligently in concert with our local councilman, Paul Krekorian, to keep Valley Village in the same council district with other communities of interest with whom we had collaborated with for the past 10 years on projects of mutual interest. On the city level, our advocacy proved successful and Valley Village remains in a newly configured CD 2.
The results on the congressional, state and county redistricting is somewhat of a mixed bag. Currently the 91601 portion of Valley Village is represented by Congressman Tony Cardenas and the remainder by Congressman Brad Sherman.
This split resulted from the last redistricting in 2010. NCVV was hoping that the 2020 redraw would make us whole and it did. According to the new maps, Congressman Tony Cardenas will now represent all of Valley Village.
Assemblyman Adrin Nazarian currently represents Valley Village but under the newly drawn lines, his district was moved further east and he will be competing with Assemblywoman Laura Friedman for the 44th AD seat. So, the November elections will decide who will represent us.
Our State Senate district is up for gabs as incumbent, Bob Hertzberg is termed out. This district was also largely reconfigured and Valley Village was included in the 27th SD which now includes the SW SFV and Malibu. Senator Henry Stern currently represents this area and he, along with Bob Hertzberg, have now declared their candidacy for County Supervisor, District 3, which termed out Sheila Kuehl now represents. So, Valley Village will have a new state senate representative but we will have to wait until the November elections to know whom that may be.
The County redistricting also resulted in changes of representation for Valley Village. We were historically included in Supervisory District 3 which encompassed a large portion of the SFV. As a result of redistricting, however, Valley Village was included in District 2 which is represented by Kathryn Barger. That is a given and Barger will be our County Supervisor.
As you can see, changes are ahead for Valley Village and the redistricting process is the political equivalent to a game of musical chairs. Your NCVV board will keep you posted and will be inviting these candidates for office to come speak to us. So, check out myvalleyvillage.com for the latest. Take a look at the new maps:
