NCVV’s Board of Directors has received numerous calls and emails regarding the removal of trees this weekend on the campus of Colfax School.
The tree removal is part of the master plan to upgrade the campus and build out new space. We do not, however, recall any mention of tree removal of this magnitude presented to stakeholders during the LAUSD community update meetings held over the last year.
While there obviously must be some changes in the landscape of the school that will permit new buildings, the map of trees that will be removed and the plan to replace them is very important to our stakeholders. Our community has a long history of protecting green spaces in Valley Village, especially those that are around our schools and Valley Village park. Over our 15 year history NCVV’s Board has planted close to 200 trees throughout the community, filed paperwork to protect 80 year old trees on the North Hollywood High campus, and continues to integrate very specific landscape planning into all projects that come before our Planning and Land Use Committee.
We expect greater transparency from the construction team on the matter of trees at Colfax Charter School, both on how many will be removed and how they will be replaced. LAUSD is hosting a meeting tonight in the school auditorium to answer questions from the community. We encourage our stakeholders to attend this meeting. If you have other questions you can contact the office of our School Board member at 818-654-3785.
We look forward to seeing you at tonight’s meeting.
